Hybrid Genre Senegalese Music From 1980..

I’m a sucker for this track, almost nothing tops it for me. It’s up there with Os Keizos’ (from Angola) Muxima.

When people talk about African music often it’s assumed that there is no outer influence, that it is purely “folk”. But actually there are many influences that are clearly audible; electric guitar music from the “British Invasion” 1960’s, Dominican Bachata which has Angolan roots; psychedelic European music; Saharan music with Islamic roots, language may be any of a number, and I get the feeling we’re not hearing Wolof (yet again I don’t speak it so how would I know). Any way, enjoy this track from the album Yoro-Kery Goro by band Number One Du Senegal, track title; Mory.
