Brandon Victor Dixon Of “Hamilton” Made A Statement About Inclusiveness And Tolerance That Was Thought “Rude” By Trump

Vice president-elect Michael Pence attended the hit musical Hamilton: An American Musical at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City and was greeted with boos and jeers by people on the street and inside the theatre. Actor Brandon Victor Dixon read a prepared statement written by the Broadway musical cast, producer Jeffrey Seller, creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and director Tommy Kail. The Hamilton team received a request for attendance by Mr Pence earlier in the day.

Mr Seller told The Hollywood Reporter:

“The cast, the creators, we all felt that we must express our feelings to vice president-elect Pence. This is not a normal time, this is not a normal election. This has not been a normal result. And in a democracy, one must let his and her voice be heard, and we were not going to the show tonight without expressing how we feel,” said Seller. “Everybody should be able to see this show, regardless of their politics, but it does just so happen that the politics of this administration have been so negative toward minorities, people of color, gay people that we felt the need to speak up. As a cast comprised of minorities, women, gay people, it was necessary. We had to speak. We had to express how we feel.”

President-elect Donald Trump has been given his Twitter back by staff it appears as he resumes to “lash out”, apparently misinformed as well, stating that the vice president-elect was “harassed” and the cast were “very rude”.

People compiled Mr Pence’s track record during his political career, showing he strongly pushed anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer legislation, having signed a bill in 2013 to criminalise same sex couples applying for a marriage license, in 2000 a proposition of removing federal funding from organisations such as the Ryan White HIV/Aids Program and allot it to “institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior.”, members of the cast of Hamilton such as Javier Muñoz in the title role, are a member of the LGBTQ community and HIV positive.  From Mr Pence’s own webpage; The Pence Agenda for the 107th Congress on “Strengthening the American Family”;

• Congress should oppose any effort to put gay and lesbian relationships on an equal legal status with heterosexual marriage.

• Congress should oppose any effort to recognize homosexual’s as a “discreet and insular minority” entitled to the protection of anti-discrimination laws similar to those extended to women and ethnic minorities.

• Congress should support the reauthorization of the Ryan White Care Act only after completion of an audit to ensure that federal dollars were no longer being given to organizations that celebrate and encourage the types of behaviors that facilitate the spreading of the HIV virus. Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior.

The Trump campaign, that was historically extreme, culminated in a historic win, however so many groups of individuals, groups of Americans, were offended and sequestered, and policies of intolerance are being disguised as “greatness”. Statesmanship requires graciousness in our leader, which we can take pride in as our representative on the world stage.

In a true democracy such as that of the United States, there is freedom of the press, the right to peacefully protest, freedom of speech, etc. Democracy folks.
