Artist Violet Overn created a series of works titled Fraternity Houses that was featured in the Huffington Post, showing compositions with a disturbing scene in which the artist herself appears ‘passed out’ in front of fraternity houses associated with the University of Southern California, amongst strewn plastic cups.
The photo images are stark and a sharp reminder of the statistics that 1 in 5 women experience sexual assault while in college.
With the recent attention to the case of former Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner, whom was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, whom received a light sentence of 6 months incarceration to his 3 felony sexual assault charges and then only serving 3 months, the New York University graduate Ms Overn stated that she was appalled by the flattering depiction of Mr Turner. A judicial system that appears to perpetuate inequality of the sexes & races, to perpetuate rape culture, did not see fit to punish Mr Turner with the prosecutors suggestion of a 6 year sentence. Judge Aaron Persky (a Stanford University graduate) failed to acknowledge the evident predator behaviour of the convicted.
